Danielle Edwardson shares her #HFhighlight

April, 30, 2019

This week, in the latest of our series celebrating the achievements of our people in our golden jubilee year, Legal Apprentice, Danielle Edwardson, shares her #HFhighlight.

When did you start working at Horwich Farrelly?
I joined the firm via the apprenticeship scheme in August 2017.

Before joining the firm what was your most unusual job?
As an A level student I had a part-time job which involved planning and hosting children’s party events at a local play centre. The job was very rewarding, seeing the children happy and being able to be a part of that was a welcome reprieve from my workload studying law, English language and sociology.

What does a typical day look like for you at Horwich Farrelly?
Usually I am in the office for 8am and I begin individually reviewing files, negotiating settlement on Credit Hire claims and aiming to get the best savings possible! One day out of the week is devoted to studying for my legal apprenticeship in preparation for my exams in the summer.

How has your career progressed since joining the firm?
I started by assisting Credit Hire file handlers with their cases for around seven months; this helped me to get a basic understanding on how a file is run and all the work that goes into litigation. I then progressed to managing my own caseload of pre-litigated and a few litigated files. Giving me the responsibility to manage my own workload has really helped develop my negotiation and time management skills and allowed me to become more independent at work. I hope to continue this progression once I have completed my apprenticeship and would love the opportunity to undertake the Level 7 apprenticeship, which I believe the firm is currently exploring.

What has been the biggest highlight of your time at Horwich Farrelly?
Last Christmas I spent a day volunteering at the Beacon Drop-in Centre in Manchester city centre, where we cooked breakfast, made tea and spoke to those experiencing homelessness. It was both an eye-opening and heart-warming experience that I will never forget. I also enjoy being a part of the firm’s activities and have arranged a few social engagement activities for the Credit Hire department including after work quizzes, guided meditation sessions, a Christmas advent calendar for the whole floor to take part in and pizza deliveries.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and outside interests?
I love going to music gigs, and I enjoy going to the cinema whenever there’s a new film that I fancy watching. I tend to spend my evenings at the gym and walking my dog Molly and on a weekend I watch my brother play football in the morning and then usually see friends for food or drinks.

What makes working at Horwich Farrelly different from other firms?
I love the people here and the whole atmosphere of the place. It is really genuine and sociable which makes it an enjoyable place to work.

What advice would you give to others starting out in their career with the firm?

To just be yourself and work hard.
