NAW 2020: Our apprentice’s profiles

February, 7, 2020

As we come to the end of National Apprenticeship Week, our cohort of 2019 apprentices discuss why an apprenticeship was a better option for them over university. They also tell us what they are tasked with in their day to day life at Horwich Farrelly and give us insight into their own lives.

Business Services Apprentices

Alice Firth, Level 3 Digital Marketing Apprentice says "I wanted to gain first-hand experience in the workplace whilst studying debt free"

I wanted to complete an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain first-hand experience in the workplace whilst studying debt-free. My day to day tasks are writing content for the weekly employee newsletter, writing intranet blogs and creating social media posts. The highlight in my apprenticeship so far has been when I first sent out beagle bites myself, it was a really proud moment seeing the newsletter come together and be sent out. The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is the people I have met including my team and the other apprentices (they are all really friendly). Something you might not know about me is that I was a mascot at the FA cup semi-finals match in Wembley. In my spare time I love to go to the gym, read and go out for meals.

Mia Nixon, Level 4 Marketing Apprentice says "the highlight of my apprenticeship so far is receiving recognition for the work I do"

I wanted to do an apprenticeship as I can get the qualifications I need without the debt of university. My main responsibilities at Horwich Farrelly include creating newsletters for clients, organising and taking newstarter headshots and writing articles for the intranet. The highlight of my apprenticeship so far is receiving recognition for the work I do, as it makes me feel appreciated for the time and effort I’ve put into it all. Similarly, on my apprentice course the highlight is receiving amazing feedback from my tutors about my essays.

Something you may not know about me is that I have participated in a record for the Guinness World Book of Records which was the most people jumping on the most amount of trampolines at the same time. In my spare time I love having a glass of wine, putting on a movie and chilling with my cat (I promise I’m not in my 40’s yet).

Legal Apprentices

Charlotte Wray, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "I love that no day is the same, there is always something new"

I wanted to do an apprenticeship to help me gain experience in the workplace. I didn’t want to go to university so working and studying seemed like the best option for me.  The work I do is very varied and some of my tasks include assisting legal files and processing cheques, I love that no day is the same, there is always something new that I am tasked with completing. The highlight of my apprenticeship so far was when we took part in a pizza making class on the apprentice induction as it allowed me to meet all the other apprentices and build friendships with them. The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is the people I work with as I really get on with everyone in my team. Something you might not know about me is that I am a twin. In my spare time I love being active and I am in-fact taking part in my first triathlon this year.

Alexandra Meredith, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is my team"

I wanted to do an apprenticeship so I can get the qualifications in order to be a Solicitor without having the debt from University. My main responsibilities include presenting new claims, taking phone calls from insurer clients/policyholders and assisting file handlers with the efficient running of their files. The highlight of my apprenticeship so far was when I received recognition from my supervisor as I had taken the most phone calls and accumulated the most completed work out of my team. The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is my team, as I get on well with everyone. Something you may not know about me is that I have 10 pets. In my spare time I love going on walks with my dogs and meeting up with friends.

Charlotte Neal, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is how much responsibility and trust is given to me"

I wanted to do an apprenticeship as I can get the qualifications I need as well as gain first-hand experience while doing it. I am currently in the academy so I assist on other employees files. I do a range of different tasks from drafting directions questionnaires, witness statements to calling chambers and booking counsel. The highlight of my apprenticeship so far was our apprenticeship induction as it got us all involved and made us work as a team which in turn got us to all get to know each other. The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is how much responsibility and trust is given to me which is a big change from college. Something you may not know about me is I also work with children at the weekend and in my spare time I love going out for food and trying new places.

Jade Halstead, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "The highlight of my apprenticeship so far has been meeting new people"

I wanted to do an apprenticeship so that I can get the experience of the job whilst also learning about it. My main responsibilities at HF is organising files, ringing claimant solicitors, the post and also assisting with any help that people may need. The highlight of my apprenticeship so far has been meeting new people and I really enjoy the people who I work with. In my spare time I usually catch up with my friends.

Hannah Campbell, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "I wanted to do an apprenticeship because i was eager to start working in law"

I wanted to do an apprenticeship because I was eager to start working in law, and knew that this was the definite choice for my career. I file and serve important documents on cases of fraudulent motor claims. I organise documents for disclosure, court hearings and trials. I also make calls to other parties to agree due dates and chase up on things. My highlight so far has been attending two conferences and reviewing footage. I find it really interesting to identify key points of a case to help the fee earner plan tactics going forward. I enjoy working in my team and helping them with a large variety of jobs. Did you know that I used to compete nationally in karate? I am very sociable and like to catch up with friends as much as I can. I love going on trips on the weekends and enjoy going to my local gym.

Juliette Smith, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "My favourite thing about my apprenticeship is the fact I'm given a lot of responsibility and have the opportunity to progress"

I chose to do an apprenticeship as I wanted to get an idea of what a job within the legal sector is really like. I am a file handler in the fraud department and I deal with mostly late notification and low speed impact files.  The highlight of my apprenticeship so far has been graduating from the academy and becoming a file handler. My favourite thing about my apprenticeship is the fact I’m given a lot of responsibility and have the opportunity to progress. Something you may not know about me is I did work experience in the House of Commons and met the cabinet ministers. In my spare time I like to go to the cinema and spend time with my younger siblings.

Gemma Kubiena, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is getting to meet new people and be part of a great team"

I decided to do the apprenticeship as I learn better on the job from real life challenges while also gaining valuable experience. My main responsibilities include handling my own pre-litigated files, reviewing them and negotiating to settle them with the third parties to avoid litigation. The highest of my apprenticeship so far was when I settled nine files in a day. The thing I enjoy most about the apprenticeship is getting to meet new people and be part of a great team. Something you may not know about me is, I adopt a Rhino called Lankeu. And in my spare time I go to the gym 4-5 times a week, binge watch Netflix and enjoy going out with my friends.

Joe Swinnerton, Level 3 Paralegal Apprentice says "I wanted to do an apprenticeship as I wanted to earn and learn"

I chose to do an apprenticeship as I wanted to earn and learn. Having been in employment for two years prior to starting this apprenticeship, I wasn’t as keen to go back into full time education again. I feel that the opportunity to learn your craft alongside being able to demonstrate and hone those skills in a work environment is invaluable really. You can get a lot of experience this way. My main responsibilities at HF consist of assisting other fee earners with various tasks, including drafting documents, speaking to insured drivers, reviewing records and noting inconsistencies, among other tasks. The highlight of my apprenticeship so far is receiving positive feedback from fee earners which really boosted my confidence as a new starter.

My favourite part of my job is the exposure to the wide variety of work. We are given quite a lot of responsibility, which is a great way of improving. Another great aspect of my job is that I regularly receive feedback. If you’re doing something well, great. If there’s a way of doing something better, fee earners will steer you in the right direction. That’s very useful when you’re just starting out in a career.  Something you may not know about me is that I am a keen cyclist and regularly commute from Sandbach. It’s honestly a good way to start the day. In my spare time I like to drink coffee and listen to Billy Joel and Springsteen.
