“Liquid Lunch” helps raise £9,100 for Alzheimer’s Society

Employees of Horwich Farrelly recently went to extreme lengths to keep their cool, after agreeing to take a barrage of cold, wet sponges to the face. The stunt, involving a dozen of the practice’s Partners, Associates and Directors, was in aid of the firm’s nominated charity, the Alzheimer’s Society, with colleagues donating money in exchange for a bucket of wet sponges.

Proceeds from the event, now in its second year, have helped boost the total amount raised for the charity over the last three months to an incredible £9,129.

Each year our employees vote for the firm’s annual nominated charity. For 2016, Alzheimer’s Society is benefitting from Horwich Farrelly’s wide range of fundraising activities, helping the organisation support some of the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK.

The most recent fundraising event saw more than 100 employees lining up to throw cold, wet sponges at volunteers who gamely allowed themselves to be placed in medieval–style wooden stocks. Each participant was asked to ‘splash out’ £1 on a charity contribution in return for throwing a bucket of wet sponges at their bosses; alternatively, a whole bucket of water could be purchased for a £10 donation.

A charity raffle, with prizes donated by employees and local businesses, and an evening social event increased the amount raised on the day to £3,000. When added to the proceeds from other fundraising events, the firm is on course to smash the £10,000 target it has set for 2016.

Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia support and research charity, carrying out important work in providing information and emotional support to those affected, as well as carrying out vital research to find a cure, improving public understanding of dementia and fighting for better Government support.

Aimée Maguet of Alzheimer’s Society, commented: “Two thirds of the cost of dementia care is provided by patients and their families, with donations making up the remaining third. Thanks to the support of companies such as Horwich Farrelly, we can continue to invest in dementia research and public awareness campaigns, thereby helping improve the chance of early diagnosis.

“It’s great to see the firm’s employees coming up with fun and different ways to encourage donations, and we look forward to seeing what Horwich Farrelly has planned next!”

Dementia is a growing problem around the world, and with increased public awareness in recent times, the Alzheimer’s Society easily won the employee vote for 2016.

“The sponge-throwing event provided another fun way to keep the fundraising going. It got everyone involved and, most importantly, opening their wallets. We have a target to raise at least £10,000 and have a number of events in the pipeline including a five-a-side football tournament and a Santa Dash in the run-up to Christmas.

“Thank you to all our brave volunteers who stepped up for a soaking in aid of this worthwhile cause, and for the incredible generosity of those donating.
