Counter Fraud

Alex joined HF in April 2003 and has worked in counter-fraud since 2004. He qualified as a solicitor in 2006 and was made Partner in 2020. Alex heads up HF’s Technical Fraud Team and Large Loss Fraud team, where s.57 CJCA arguments are deployed to defeat dishonestly exaggerated high value claims, as well as leading on Fraud Ring/Professional enabler strategies. He has particular expertise in pursuing actions in contempt of court and is sought out to handle strategic litigation on behalf of a number of insurer clients. In 2020, the Professional Enabler Team won the Insurance Post Fraud Award for Investigation of the Year for exposing Dr Zafar, who had inflated a medical prognosis at the behest of his instructing solicitor. Alex is responsible for one of the leading cases on contempt of court, Jet2 v Hughes, which established that contempt proceedings can be grounded in pre-action conduct. This case led to an amendment being made to CPR to reflect the decision. Alex provides training in his specialist areas to clients both in person and remotely and has hosted a number of HFTV episodes including a ‘live’ event focusing on s.57 CJCA. Alex conducts regular case clinics for his clients.
